AFF U-23 Championship kicks off today, at the new Morodok Techo National Stadium

PHNOM PENH: The third edition of the AFF Under-23 Championship will kick off tomorrow with the spanking new venue of the Morodok Techo National Stadium set to bear witness to the unearthing of future ASEAN superstars.

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-23 Championship will commence with two matches at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Cambodia’s capital city, according to the latest schedule released by the organisers.

For host Cambodia, the tournament will not only be a great opportunity to showcase their new 60,000 capacity venue but also give the lads the chance to show quality in front of their home fans as they open their campaign in Group A against Brunei DS.

The Philippines will play Timor-Leste starting 4:00 pm, while the Cambodian U-23 team will face its counterpart from Brunei at 7:00 pm.

Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Laos and Myanmar are also competing in the tournament.

Defending champions Indonesia withdrew from the tournament after many of its players and team officials tested positive for Covid-19.

“We will be looking for a good outcome in this tournament as this will be a good preparation for the SEA Games which Cambodia will be hosting in 2023,” said Cambodia head coach Hirose Ryu.

“The last two years have been difficult to get matches for young players, so this tournament is important.”

Cambodia is in Group A together with Brunei, Timor-Leste and the Philippines. Group B is composed of Malaysia, Myanmar and Laos, while Group C is comprised of Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.

Cambodia is slightly favoured against tiny Brunei, according to football observers.

In addition to playing on home soil, the Cambodians have also beaten Brunei in five out of eight matches. Two matches ended in a draw, while Brunei registered a single win against Cambodia during the AFF Championship in 2012.

Cambodia will next face the Philippines on Feb 17 and Timor-Leste three days later. The tournament will conclude on Feb 26.
